On September 7 th , 2024 the Katama Airfield Trust partnered with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to host The Young Eagles Aviation Rally at Katama Airfield. The Young Eagles Rally is a program that introduces young people, typically ages 8 to 17, to the world of aviation. These events are designed to inspire interest in aviation and aerospace careers by providing participants with the opportunity to experience flight firsthand.
The primary goal of the rally is to give youth a chance to fly in a small aircraft, meet pilots, and learn about aviation. It aims to spark an interest in flying and aviation-related careers. Young participants are given the opportunity to take a free flight in a general aviation aircraft, often piloted by volunteer EAA members and local volunteers. Before the flights, participants may attend a brief ground school session where they learn about the basics of flight, aircraft safety, and the principles of aviation. Many rallies feature a variety of aircraft on display, allowing participants to explore and learn about different types of planes.
Thanks to EAA Chapter 51 and The Katama Airfield Trust, the first Young Eagles Rally at Katama Airfield was a great success. Many of their volunteers traveled to Martha’s Vineyard , showcasing their commitment and enthusiasm. Their involvement, along with the unique aspects that this inaugural event could provide, made a significant impact. A total of 33 local young people signed up to be a part of the program, there were 65 islanders at the airfield the day of the event, and 13 volunteers, including 5 from EAA Cape Cod Chapter 51.
Nineteen young Islanders, aged 9 to 17, had the opportunity to engage in unique aviation experiences. They participated in ground school, explored various aircraft, sat in cockpits, and enjoyed individual 15- to 20-minute flights over Katama and Chappaquiddick, with “stick time” available for those eager to try their hand at flying. The inclusion of delicious food from Katama Kitchen, along with the support from Chapter 51 registration, local volunteer ground crew and pilots, and the Katama Airfield team, contributed to a memorable first experience in aviation for the Young Eagles participants and their families.
The day was a resounding success, with most families expressing how wonderful the event was and many mentioning that other children would also be interested in similar opportunities in the future.
Several attendees have formed new friendships, thanks to the collaborative efforts between EAA Chapter 51 Cape Cod and Katama Airfield Trust! Overall, the Young Eagles Aviation Rally is a fantastic opportunity for youth to engage with aviation in a hands-on and exciting way, fostering a lifelong passion for flying and aerospace.
