Katama Airfield, Martha’s Vineyard – September 21, 2023 — On Sunday, September 21st, 20 local island students, ages 8 to 15, took to the skies and the classroom during the Young Eagles Rally hosted at Katama Airfield. Sponsored by EAA Chapter
51 and The Katama Airfield Trust, the event provided a unique blend of flight education and actual flying experience aimed at inspiring the next generation of aviators.
The day began with a brief flight school session where students learned the basics of aviation from knowledgeable pilots and ground volunteers. Following the educational segment, each young participant had the opportunity to soar above Martha’s
Vineyard on flights piloted by one of eight certified EAA volunteer pilots, including renowned local aviators Mike Creato, Bill Brine, and Tyler Pepper.
“This event is about connecting kids with the thrill and wonder of aviation,” said Dr. David Halsey, Katama Airfield trustee and event organizer. “We are proud to partner with EAA Chapter 51 to offer an unforgettable experience that sparks curiosity and
opens the door to future opportunities in flight.”
The Young Eagles Rally was supported by a dedicated team of 10 ground volunteers who helped with educational programming and event coordination. Among the volunteers were Katama Airfield trustees Harald Findlay and Leelee Klein, whose efforts ensured a smooth and inspiring day for all attendees.
The Katama Airfield Trust and EAA Chapter 51 extend their gratitude to Martha’s Vineyard Public Schools and The Martha’s Vineyard Boys and Girls Club for helping spread the word about the event and engage the community’s youth. Special thanks
also go to Katama Kitchen for providing a great lunch and beverages that kept everyone energized throughout the day.
The event reflects a deep commitment by both the EAA and Katama Airfield Trust to fostering a love of aviation within the Vineyard community and encouraging young people to consider the field as a rewarding path.
